"Planning" a database enviroment - a bit off topic
Hi
I'm about to plan a upgrade to our database enviroment.
We have 7 database servers running different kinds of SQL server (7.0,
2000, 2005) in an unmanaged enviroment,
The environment services wide range of business applikations and the demand
for availabilitiy and security is increasing and the environment should meet
the operational requirements led out from/required to ITIL best practice
principles.
What i'm looking for at resources including frameworks/toolkits,
guides/recommendations, consideration/decision for planning a database
enviroment that meets these requirements (i.e. the process upgrade/migrate
from A to B).
I've been searching the net for this but I can't seem to find any resources
that takes up this matter, so any help appriciated-

I still need some resources that takes a more holistic view of the process,
ie. not just how I plan to upgrade a certain databaseserver, but also how my
database environment should be build.
By environment I mean all the database servers and applications (and other
components) that communicate with the environment, that is, I need som
Architechtual design considerations for the _whole_ environment, including
operations, support etc. etc.

"Overflow" Trying to move Access table for SQL Server?
I cannot find in the help section why this happens. I would appreciate any help you send my way.
Thanks,
Joe| I'm trying to move several Access Tables from a moderate sized database
| to SQL Server 2000. Most of the tables will transfer using the Upgrade
Wizard
| in Access 2003, however, there are a couple of tables that will not
transfer.
| The wizard reports at the end of the upgrad, "table skipped" or "overflow"
--
Hi Joe,
One known issue that causes the "table skipped" error are column names that
contain symbols such as quotes, commas and slashes. SQL Server doesn't
support all symbols for column names. If you rename such "odd" column
names, the upsize wizard should work again. Also a known issue is:
ACC2000: Tables Not Upsized When Query or Table Name Contains Apostrophe
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216218
If all else fails, you can use Data Transformation Services (DTS) to export
to SQL Server:
ACC2000: How to Use Data Transformation Services (DTS) to Export Data from
a Microsoft Access Database to a SQL Server Database
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=250616
Hope this helps,

"Invalid object format name" Error
I am trying to upgrade a crystal application from VS.Net 2003 to VS.Net 2005. Some of the reports work just fine in the new enviroment. But one of the reports does give me a hard time.
It is a little complicated, so please bare with me. The report uses a c# derived DataSet class as its Database Fields source. It also uses a DataTable as its data source. When I try to bind the report with the data source, for example, myReport.setDataSource(myDataTable);. It throws the following exception:
CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.InternalException was unhandled by user code
Message="\rError in File C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\temp_c2eb4661-c3c0-429a-9d9f-c0b280e112bc {645E2563-B9C6-4A6F-9714-618DF7CB1EE2}.rpt:\nInvalid object format name."

at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)
I traced the program and realized that once I change the format of the FieldObject and call the report object's refresh() method, the same exception is thrown. For example:
myReport.Refresh(); // ok here
myFiledObject.Width = 0;
myReport.Refresh(); // throw exception
I also tried to reset all the FieldFormat for the FieldObject, but the same thing happen. Once I change the FieldFormat and refresh, it throws an exception. I am so confused now!
myReport.Refresh(); // ok here
myFiledObject.FieldFormat.BooleanFormat.OutputType = BooleanOutputType.TrueOrFalse;
myReport.Refresh(); // throw exception
Can any crystal report expert/genius give me some hints on what did I do wrong or what could be the problem? Thanks in Advance!If possible, use verify database option and check whether it is connected to the server properly

"Hill Climbing" a More General Question on Systematic SQL Skill Upgrade
his/her sql skills proactively vs. skills gained over a period of time
merely because of work experience. SQL skill here refers to mainly MS
SQL Server related skill.
What could be reasonably effective ways to go for the proactive
approach?
Off head, I'm thinking of the following:
*) read up and re-read on a few selected books such as sql for smartie
except old textbooks (some of them have been read/studied)?
Little challenge: definition of great sql books or online materials?
*) get into a habit of visiting some good sql web sites include MS sql
web site. Little challenge: definition of "good sql web sites"?
*) form a routine of reading good SQL NGs like this
Little challenge: which thread(s) to read? By interest only is sort of
limiting.
*) find an interesting project (non-work related) to embark on to test,
verify the above three?
Big challenge: the above 1 through 3 is pretty dry, how could one
manage to do it in the evening/at night after work when a bit tired and
desires to relax instead?

Well, I do all those except make up projects. I have enough of doing work
without doing more work...
I notice that a training course isn't on your list.
Or talking to someone is a DBA or more experienced developer.

Regards,
Andy O'Neill|||Well, the training course is not realy in the game since I kind of make
this self study thing but not necessarily undesirable. Talking to DBA
is an addition.
Thanks.

"downgrade" edition ?
I save SQLServer 7.0 enterprise edition installed on NT
4.0 PDC.
And now i want to install SQLServer 2000 standard edition
and upgrade default instance. When i run SQLServer 2000
setup, the option "Upgrade..." is not available.
I think it happens because different version: enterprise
and standart (or not ?)
How i can "downgrade" SQLServer edition ?
Or i should backup all 7 databases, install SQLServer 2000
and restore all databases from backup,include master (to
preserve logins)?I can point you in the direction of a good article on this subject :-
