"Version 2.0 Is Not A Compatible Version"

When using VS2003 and Reporting Services 2005, I am met with the following
compilation error after creating a dataset then trying to design it:
"Version 2.0 Is Not A Compatible Version"
I cant drag any tools to the design surface, or add any fields. I have both
SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services as well as 2005.
Anyone have a hint on how I can remedy this?

"User Cancelled" Error while viewing Crystal report

Hi,
I have a Crystal Reports v10 Report that has been working fine
for the past X years. It is invoked by a VB6 app using the
Report Viewer. For some reason, sometimes when the report is
executed, it displays the message "User Cancelled" immediately
after the viewer window is opened, even though the user did not
cancel the report. None of the code has changed, neither has the
report.

Does anyone have any clue as to why this message should appear?

Very urgent, Thanks in Advance...

Regards,
AnandhSometimes I see this message when there is an issue with the print spooler on the computer where the report is being generated. Try going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and then restarting the Print Spooler service. After doing this, reboot the computer.

If this doesn't work, then it isn't the print spooler causing the problem.

Good Luck! :)

"Unable to count the members of the level" error

Hi guys,
I encountering the following error whenever I try to create a new dimension
in the MS Analysis Server.
"Unable to count the members of the 'Area Code' level.Please check your
table joins."
I have check my table joins, all the valid. Also I am using the snowflake
schema.
How to resolve the issue?
Thanks
Akber.
When you process the dimension, the actual SQL that Analysis Server sends to
SQL Server is shown in the processing window. You can copy this and execute
it yourself in Query Analyzer to see if the results you get are what you
expect.

|||You might also consider enabling the system-wide processing log file. This
is a best practice with Analysis Services.
To enable it, bring up Analysis Manager. Right-click on the server and
select "Properties..."
Then go to the "Logging" tab. Enable the processing log file and specify
some well known location, e.g. C:\OLAP_Processing.txt
Then all of the SQL Statements, begin/end times, # of records processed,
etc. -- everything that comes out in the processing dialog box -- will also
be written to the system-wide processing log file. This allows you to keep
long-term history of what was processed, when, and by-whom.

you can catch the query through the log or through the SQL Server profiler.

another way to understand what AS do is to put youself some value in the
dimension count property of your dimension level (put 10 for example)
then process the dimension and you'll see (in the process dialog box) again
the query used by AS to retreive the database values.

"Too many requests being handled for user" error while accessing Report Manager

Hi,
When I try to access Report Manager(http://<reportserver>/Reports) I'm
getting the following error message:
"There are currently too many requests being handled for user:
[DOMAIN]\[USER]. Please wait until the current requests have finished
processing before issuing any more."
However there are no problems when I try to access the Report
Server(http://<reportserver>/ReportServer).
Has anyone encountered a similar situation before?
Thanks.
RamkiRestarting IIS resolves the issue. Increasing the
"MaxActiveReqForOneUser" in RSReportServer.config from its default of
20 might also be an option.

"Timeout expired" error occuring while fetching the data with SQL Server 2000

Hello,
I have one application which is having written inasp.net & plainasp.
I am having one button on asp page,
when i will click on that button, then itwill execute one other asp page.
And after the execution of that second asp page, I redirect it to some
ASPX page with some values.
On the ASPX page, it will connect to the Database, and insert the values.
Thus, sometime, the following error is occuring :
"Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Main thing is that i am testing it on my local machine, then also it is giving me this error ...
Insert into statement is also not much complicated :
just I inserted three values in one table.
Is this occuring due to the mixer of asp & aspx??
Plz give me some proper solution.
I want it in efficient manner, because this application will be accessed by number of users at the same time.
Plz help me.

Thanks,
Sandy
Have you been able to pointpint exactly where the bottleneck is occuring? Is the INSERT statement definitely the culprit?
|||Yes...
for insert statement.
But I think this is not creating any matter.
matter is the connection with DB.
This is not occuring everytime.
It's frequancy is 30%.
But for number of users concurrent access, i am not sure is it same or may be increase.
Currently I am using the following connection string :
ConnectionString="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;User ID=test;Password=test;min pool size=1; max pool size=300"

If there is any issue in this string, plz let me know.
Plz give me the feasible solution ASAP.
Thanks,
Sandy
|||I'd use Performance Monitor to check how well your connection pooling is working for you. See this article:Tuning Up ADO.NET Connection Pooling in ASP.NET Applications, in particular the Monitoring Connection Pooling Behavior section

"Timeout expired"

In a legacy project on the production server, we have a database which
generated the following error when executing a report (written in ASP).
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e31'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired
I then created a SQL dump of this database and exported the tables to Access
MDB file.
Using another test server, I re-created the entire database using the SQL
dump file and imported the data using Access MDB file. Next, I copied the
entire ASP source tree over to this test server.
Lo and behold, when I ran the same report program, it ran successfully!
Could someone tell me why the legacy project running on the production
server caused this timeout error, while the exact same program running on a
test server runs without problem?
Could it be an indexing issue?

Yes, it could be indexing.
It could also be locks, server load, etc.
Dev servers tend to be less busy than production machines, and what works
well in the sandbox might not be so hot when the server's really up against
it.
If you've not done so, start by having ASP developers set a custom timeout
value to something other than the default.

"The SQL Server cannot obtain a LOCK resource at this time" error

Hi there,
I am running on my machine the following SQL statements on my (local) SQL
Server:
SET NOCOUNT ON
SET ROWCOUNT 1500
delete_more:
delete table1 where field1 = '1' and field2 = '2'
IF @.@.ROWCOUNT > 0 GOTO delete_more
SET ROWCOUNT 0
The table has arround 5 million records and the DELETE statement would
delete arround 100000 records. I can see by running sp_lock that SQL is
escalating the locks to a table lock.
I am running in paralel the following:
SET ROWCOUNT 100
delete table1 where field1 = '3' and field2 = '2'
SET ROWCOUNT 0
This query is running fine, however the DELETE statement fails with the
error 1204:
"The SQL Server cannot obtain a LOCK resource at this time". Can somebody
shed some light for me here? Am I not able to run two DELETE statements is
paralel or am I doing something wrong?
I am running with the run_value for locks set to 0.
Thank you in advance.You mentioned there is already a table lock on that particular table, as it
is deleting millions of records. You probably need to wait for this
transaction to complete before you execute another delete statement on the
same table.
I suspect changing isolation level would solve your purpose.

one to finish in order to start the second one.
However I do not understand why I get the error, since the first statement
is suppose to delete 1500 records (so maximum 1500 key locks applied, if
there is no lock escalation) and the second statement is deleting 100
records. Am I missing something here?

"The specified module could not be found", Server Network Utility

Has any body had a problem whereby when you try and load the Server Network
Utility you get the error "The specified module could not be found". I have
SQL Server 2000 developer installed on my machine and 3 instances of MSDE and
2 of wMSDE. I have reinstalled sql server sp4, this has had no effect. Any
ideas anybody?
This issue is typically caused by a damaged installation of client tools. I
suggest that you reinstall the client tools through the following steps:
1. Insert the SQL Server 2000 compact disc into your CD-ROM drive. If the
compact disc does not autorun, double-click Autorun.exe in the root
directory of the compact disc.
2. Select SQL Server 2000 Components, select Install Database Server, and
then click Next at the Welcome screen of the SQL Server Installation Wizard.
3. In Computer Name dialog box, Local Computer is the default option, and
the local computer name appears in the edit box. Click Next.
4. In the Installation Selection dialog box, click Create a new instance of
SQL Server, or install Client Tools, and then click Next.
5. Follow the directions on the User Information, Software License
Agreement, and related screens.
6. In the Installation Definition dialog box, click Client tools only, and
then click Next.
7. In the Select Components dialog box, accept the defaults or select the
components you want, and then click Next.
8. In the Start Copying Files dialog box, click Next to complete the
installation of the client tools.
9. Check whether the Server Network Utility works correctly. If it works,
reapply SP4.
If the issue persists, I'd like to use the Dependency Walker tool to track
the module that cannot be loaded. To do so, follow these steps:
1) Download Dependency Walker utility from www.dependencywalker.com.

"Text column data incomplete" error during replication

I'm doing a transactional replication for the first time between 2
servers.
After 14 minutes of running (according to the logs), the replicaton
crashes. This is what I find in the log file generated by the
distribution agent. It starts bulk copying data from many tables until
it finally crashes on the first copy.
Any ideas why?
What does it mean 'Text column data incomplete'.
Table Parcel has 2 text columns that can be NULL.
Also, at the time the replication was taking place, it is possible
other transactions might have been being added/deleted from
Parcel......could this produce this type of error?
Here goes the erro log:

I treid the same replication 3 more times, and the erro I got on those 3

why 2 sp's anyway (with & without brackets)?
how can I control the creation of this procedure? I looked at the
properties tab of this publictaion at the Publisher, under Article
Entity Address, and make sure all the options are selected (e.g. Replace
INSERT commands with this stored procedure, etc).
The only option I could not access is the one at the very bottom that
causes replication to use the columns name. It was just enabled.
Any ideas?
btw: your book about Transactional & Snapshot replication looks good, I
haven't found a good book on replication yet! Is it out already?

"Syntax error or access violation" with new (July 22 2003) driver

Hi,
I'm having troubles with the SQL Server ODBC driver 2000.81.9001.40 dated on
July 22 2003. It is incompatible with our custom application developed with
Centura SQLWindows/32 Version 1.5.1-PFT2. When running some queries, the
error message reported by the driver is
Error No: 20035
Error Text: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Syntax error or access
violation
The only suspicious fact is that the command is broken by a CR-LF (new line)
combination. This code had worked for years without any problem, sending
such broken line commands
The SQL command sent is:
{call spEjeSelectRem ('vCtePedTem_ChecaPoliticas
20,20,159,1,935502,17700024,1200148,null,
1')}
Note there is a new-line sequence behind the last parameter
My questions are:
Can It be the cause of the above mentioned error?
Wat can I do, install the previous version?
The ODBC driver is dated July 22 2003. It was automatically downloaded by
Microsoft Automatic Update. How can I protect specifically from ODBC driver
version updates?
Thanks in advance
FaustinoOk,
I did the following:
-"Uninstall" MDAC by
dasetup.exe /u
(actually the uninstall procedure didn't work, but at least it leave the
ODBC in such inconsistent state that I could install a previous version)
-Installed the MDAC v.2.7 that I had before the bug appeared. The bug didn't
appear again.
However yesterday the Microsoft Update suggested to install the security
patch 823718 related to MDAC. I crossed my fingers and applied it. No
problem. SQL Server driver is now 2000.81.9041.40 and the bug didn't show
again.
Hope this helps somebody

"string or binary data would be truncated" error message

I am getting the message ("string or binary data would be truncated") when trying to update a field in a table in my database, but am unclear as to why. I understand that the error usually occurs when the length of a string exceeds the limit allowed for a field in the database, but in this situation, that constraint should not apply. The length of the field for which I am trying to make the update is a varchar field of length 100. The value for which I am attempting to update is an e-mail address of length 42 of the format xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@.yahoo.com. The initial insertion of the value (via my website) succeeded in inserting the first 40 characters of the address, but cut off the "om" at the end. It doesn't seem to matter how large I make the field in the database as it always gives me this error when I try to make the update. I have tried to change the value in both Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager, but I invariably receive the same error.

Any ideas?I just posted my best guesses of causes for this here:

http://forums.asp.net/thread/1366165.aspx

Hope it helps,

Joe|||Thanks, your tips actually did help. There was a trigger on the table I was trying to insert into and it was attempting to insert into a table where the email field only allowed for addresses as large as 40 characters.

"String constants must end with a double quote" error

Hi,
I've created a bunch of reports locally on my machine, where they all run
just fine, but when I try to deploy them to a server I run into some
problems.
I only have access to the server through a third party remote desktop
application (NetOp), so I have to do the deployment by manually uploading
the .rdl file in Report Manager. The reports uses MDX queries which I've had
to change into concatenated strings to allow for parameters, but when I try
to upload the files I only get the "BC30648 String constants must end with a
double quote." error.
If I remove the parameters, and the quotes around the whole query the files
upload just fine. Additionally, I've tried uploading the files manually both
on my own machine and a colleague's without getting this error. The reports
also run fine on these two machines after the upload (and configuration of
datasources).
Below is a sample of the query in a report that will throw the error on the
remote machine (for clarity this one doesn't use parameters):
<Query>
<DataSourceName>SullandGruppen</DataSourceName>
<CommandText>="SELECT
{[Measures].[Faktisk denne mnd]} ON COLUMNS,
{[Dato].[All Dato].[2004].[January]} ON ROWS
FROM Finanskube
WHERE
([Avdeling].[Salg],
[Avdelingsstruktur].[All Avdelingsstruktur].[3 Inntekter],
[Firma].[Gjovik Auto])"</CommandText>
<rd:UseGenericDesigner>true</rd:UseGenericDesigner>
</Query>
Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? This is a fresh
install of Reporting Services, so I haven't tried deploying reports to it
before. It have only got the Server Components and .NET runtime installed.
Many thanks for any input!
-Christian NordbakkWell, my bad this one :o/
I had developed the reports on SP1 but forgotten to upgrade the server. That
caused the report to crash because of the query being split onto multiple
lines, which pre-SP1 doesn't support.

"SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error when trying to connect from a Windows S

Hi!

I understand that this topic is one of the most discussed topics ever. However i could not find the relevant information after going through (almost) all the posts so far. Hence this post.

I am getting the 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied' error when I am trying to access SQL Server from a WINDOWS SERVICE. SQL Server and the Windows service are running on two different machines. (When they are on the same machine, it works). All the solutions I found so far are related to web apps. What should I do in the case of a windows service? My connection string uses SQL server authentication. (I tried with windows authentication. Its not working either.). Under what login does windows services run and how can I add it to valid SQL server logins?

what version of sql server you are using SQL 2000 or SQL 2005. If sql 2005 have you enabled remote connection on sql server|||I am using SQL Server 2000. My Connection String is "Data Source=Proficio3;Initial Catalog=PRO-TMS_2.5;User ID=service_login;Password=service"|||

Hi,

Please try to check if the SQL Server you're connecting to is the default instance on that server. If not, you will need to add instance name after the server name like:

Data Source=Proficio3\SQLInstance

"SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error message

Hello!

When I start my .aspx with ASP.NET Web Matrix Server, it work, but when i try to start it with IIS I get error message.

TIA,

Misha

What is your connection string to the database like? Are you using a trusted connection? Is IIS running under a different account than Web Matrix? SQL Server needs to know about which accounts are acceptable.

|||string ConnectionString = "server=SERVER;database=pubs;trusted_connection=true";
SQL is on server PC, Web Matrix on Workstation.

"SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error

I'm trying to create to set up connection between my web application on the server and
the database on another box and getting "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error.
Both the web server and the database machine are Windows 2003 Server, there's no firewall
enabled, there's mixed authentication enabled on the sql server. The machines are not on the
same domain so I'm using SQL Server authentication from web.config. Here's my connection string:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=sqlboxip;User id=sqlaccountname;Pwd=sqlpass;Initial catalog=dbname">
I've also got <identity impersonate="true"> set in web.config.
Had it the connection working at some stage but then with more tweaking and app reinstall
back square one... Please help!</identity></add>Hi,
Are you able to connect to the SQL Server Database using the same credentials from SQL Server (Enterprise Manager or Query Analyzer?)
Thanks.|||Yes, I can connect to it from my dev box in ASP.NET
|||Did you set the connection string of your connection on that page of the app?

I put this in the page load.
this.cnMainConnection.ConnectionString = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["ConnectionsString"].ToString();

|||Hi,
Ok, can you post the code which you are trying to execute.
Thanks.

"SQL Server does not exist or access denied"

Hi everyone!

I receive error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" when I try to run a web application from my notebook. (when I'm working at home) The weird thing is that it occurs sporadically. Sometimes the connection works just fine. Other times it fails. When I run the application on my workstation at the office everything works perfectly.

Here's the stack trace:

-----------------

Of course, I make sure to change the connection strings in both environments.

Anyone have an idea of what I can look at to try to troubleshoot?

Thanks as always!!

Emi ^_^Hi Emi,

This is virtually always an access issue. How are you trying to connect to the db? IOW, what is your connection string? Are you sure your laptop is setup properly?

The other thing that strikes me is connection pooling. Do you do anything with pooling--change defaults, etc.--in the app?

Don|||Hi!

Thanks for responding. Still having the issue - it's so frustrating. I'm storing my connection string in the web.config which is then read and used in my Data.cs (database class)

Here's the connection string. In this case, the database is on the same machine as the web application. (similar to the how the client's production server is setup):

<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MyComputerName;database=DatabaseName;uid=sa;pwd=NonBlankPassword;" />

An example of the actual data access - nothing complex here.

public static void ExecuteSql(string ConnectionString, string sql)
{
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(ConnectionString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sql,conn);
conn.Open();
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
cmd.Dispose();
conn.Close();
conn.Dispose();
}

Like I mentioned before, all works great on my workstation at the office. This might totally be a hardware - issue. Is there anything wrong with the above code that would cause any pooling problems.

Thanks again!

Emi ^_^|||Hi Emi,

Okay, assuming that your sa password in the actual connection string is right, everything else looks okay.

One thing to check is whether the SS2K server is set up to use SQL Server authentication rather than Windows integrated authentication only. You can do that in Enterprise Manager, right-clicking on the server, and selecting Properties. Under the Security tab make sure that "SQL Server and Windows" is selected.

Sigh. But never mind about that. This doesn't explain the sporadic nature of the error. There is something going on with the connection pool. You're not doing anything with the connection pool in your code, but it has a problem when it goes to the pool for a connection. Hmm. And it's happening deep within the .NET framework.

Have you monitored the pool to make sure that connections are still available? It's a weird error to get for a depleted pool, though.

This will take more research. Anyone else have any ideas?

"sp_cursor" error while printing web report using Reporting Servic

Hi there,
We're using MS SQL 2000 with MS Server 2003. It's a Xeon ( single processor)
based Server with 1GB RAM.
We also use 'Reporting Services' to generate web reports.
The problem is , our application will have problem writing ( ie. INSERT
INTO) to the transaction database if the web reporting is printing data from
the same transaction table.
Following errors were captured in our application.
_sp_cursor:_The_cursor_identifier_value_provided_(xxxxxxx)_is_not_valid
where xxxxxx cpuld be some kind of hex codes , for example 'abcdf08'
,'abcdf03' etc.
Could the MS SQL Server not able to cope during high traffic?
Pls. help.
Thanks.
CD MooHi
This sounds like you may have blocking/deadlocking which rolls back the
reporting services connection. To monitor this check out
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271509/EN-US/. If you do not need to report
on the currently live data, then you would be better creating a copy
periodically and point the reports to that. If you need more up-to-date data
you may want to check out log shipping. With SQL 2005 you could use database
snapshots for this purpose.

We're using SQL Server 2000 with the latest service pack.
I have 2 SQL Servers, Server1 & Server2.
I created a table named Trade in Server1.
Created a view named vwTrade in Server2.
At first, I can see the data from vwTrade. Then I deleted the content of
Trade. Uploaded it with a new set of data using DTS from a foxpro database.
but after that, it is can no longer be seen in vwTrade. If I create another
view named vwTrade2 in Server1, it works fine. But when the view is
recreated in Server2, it just give and empty rowset.
