"Unable To Connect to SQL Server" from Crystal 8.0

Hi All,

I am using Crystal Report 8.0 to create report on MSDE sp3a , but when I try to make connection Natively :
More Data Source->MiCrosoft SQL Server-> [Dialog opens]
then I type the ServerName, UserID and Password.

System hangs for a while, then I get this error :
"Unable To Connect to Sql server MyServer"

BUT IF I create system DSN (ODBC) then create the report, it works.

Why can't I create report Natively on MSDE ??

Thank you very much for any help,
KristWhat are you typing for ServerName? Is this database on a base or named instance? Also, don't it ask you for the database name?|||Hi,
Thanks for your response.

>What are you typing for ServerName?
I type 'XTANTO', it is my computer name, as I can see on service manager.

>Is this database on a base or named instance?
This is a base instance. FYI, this is a test computer, sp many 'install & uninstall' here, previously there is SQL Server personal edition there, but I already uninstalled it.
After that I install 'Client Connectivity only', and there is No way I can uninstall it. Then I install MSDE SP3a. and I get the error.
Does this give us any clue ?

>Also, don't it ask you for the database name?
Only after I type ServerName, UserID and Password correctly.
In this case, it doesn't give me list of database to choose because its error "Unable To Connect to SQL Server"

My last try will be reinstall win 98.
Do you think that will help ?

Thank you for your help,
Krist|||Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. There should be a service that starts with MSSQL. Is it started? What is the full name of the service (or all the services that start with MSSQL)?|||Hi,

I am on Win98, there is NO services on control panel.
What else should I try ?

Thank you,
Krist|||Actually, here's a better question. Why are you running this on a Windows 98 machine??? Do a search for SQLScan on http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9552d43b-04eb-4af9-9e24-6cde4d933600&displaylang=en

Run that on your machine. See what it says the name of the instance is.|||Hi Derrick,
Thanks for keep on helping..

>Actually, here's a better question. Why are you running this on a Windows >98 machine???
We are software developer company, we want to reach as wide market as possible, we want to keep on supporting windows 98.

The docs said Windows 98 is supported. Is there any known issue of MSDE 2000 on WIn 98 ?

Thank you,
Krist|||No that I know of. Did you run that tool on your computer?

"Simple" recovery model?

SQL 2000 SP3a on W2K SP4 server. I've created a new database with only three
tables and set the Recovery Model to Simple. The reason being, these tables
are essentially "temp" tables who's data will be constantly deleted and
re-inserted. Since it is all calculated data, I have no need for recovery of
any kind. My problem is this: Even with the Recovery Model set to Simple,
the Transaction Log grows exponentially. This is a real problem for me since
these tables may be emptied and re-populated 1,500 times in one evening.
What recovery model should I use in this situation in order to keep the Log
file size under control? Or should I just run SHRINKDATABASE or some other
utility after each cleaning?
Hi
Keep your transactions short and sweet. If it is all one transaction, and
you update 10 million rows, you will need a lot of space.
Shrink DB will not help unless the transaction is committed or rolled back.

"NT Authority/NetworkService" not available as a login

Just installed Server 2003 and then SQL server 2000 followed by sp3a and I'm trying to use an ASP.NET program called DNN which wants "NT Authority / NetworkService" user for access to the database. However, "NT Authority / NetworkService" is not showing
up in the database after installation.
Why is this?
How can I fix it?
Thanks
OK...finally, out of frustration, I just pasted in the name 'NT Authority/NetWorkService'
Start at:
SQL Server Enterprise Manager,
Security node,
Logins node (right click and select New Login),
SQL Server Login properties - New Login,
Paste 'NT Authority/NetWorkService' into the 'name field'
The 'NT Authority/NetWorkService' user was created and it also appears to work properly.

"Error!" msg during "setup support files" installation

Windows 2003 Server. Asp.Net 1.1. Sql Server 2000 Sp3a.
"Error!" msg during "setup support files" installation.
Unable to install Reporting Services. Found a couple of users experiencing
the same problem, but no solution :( Any ideas?
/ChrisFirst, check the error log in Event Viewer and see if you can find any
EventID number for your error. That can pinpoint what the error really is.
If it's error 25619, then check if the DTC service is running? Go check in
services.msc for "Distributed Transaction Coordinator".
Even if it says "started", it might not be. I've had some troubles with
installing RS, and the DTC was the culprit.
It's been discussed in this thread:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&threadm=89FD4D17-1F6A-4BCF-A15E-CF098C5A68D7%40microsoft.com&rnum=1
In this thread, Pitroda asks about a password for Network Service. Just
leave the password blank, at least that worked for me.
